Suzanne Valadon had started her career to work as a model for artists when she was a teenager.

When she was 18 years old, she got her son, Maurice Utrillo.

In the early 1890s, she learned how to paint and draw from Edgar Degas. She remained one of Edgar Degas' closest friends until his death.

In 1893 she had a six-month affair with Erik Satie.
When She left him at its end, he said, with "rien, à part une froide solitude qui remplit la tête avec du vide et le cœur avec de la peine (nothing but an icy loneliness that fills the head with emptiness and the heart with sadness)".

In 1896, she married to stockbroker Paul Mousis. But in 1909, she left him for Andre Utter. She married Andre Utter in 1914.
